「Foggy Morning」With the last month of autumn here I recently found the gardens where I take a morning walk covered in fog. It impressed me how mysterious the scenery with which I am so familiar now became. I started to think about how this could apply to my netsuke.
Netsuke is known for it exquisite detail but I have noticed on occasions when I have taken a carving to the point of carving every last little detail of a subject how it often has a negative effect on the work. Maybe what is happening is that with too much detail the mystery is lost. Is this what makes an old very worn antique netsuke so appealing to many collectors? Somehow in the loss of detail the netsuke gains a foggy mysterious quality.
Mystery in art appeals to me. I find it exciting.
「～霧の朝～」先月より秋めいてきたこちらから・・・。
最近のことですが、よく朝の散歩に訪れる庭園が霧に覆われているところに行き会い、日頃見慣れている風景が、こうも不思議な雰囲気に変わり得ることに、とても感銘を受けました。そして同じような感覚で、根付を捉えてみることができるのではないか、とふと思い始めたのです。
根付は、その精巧な細部によるところを知られていますが、私自身、全ての小さな細部までを彫り込んでいこうとする過程において、その綿密さが、いかにその作品にマイナスに働いてしまうことがあり得るか、と感じることが折にふれてあります。おそらく、あまりに細かすぎる細部により失われてしまうミステリアスなニュアンスもある、ということなのではないかと思うのですが、つまりそれは、細部の摩滅してしまったアンティークの根付作品が、非常に強くコレクターたちに訴えるところを持つのと関係しているといえるのでしょうか？
細部の消失によって、根付は霧に包まれたような不思議な雰囲気を得ることもあるようなのです。
このように、アートにおけるその神秘・不可思議は、私をとりこにし、気持ちを高揚させてくれるのでした。
